Is Nieves really this nuts or is he simply pandering to the local teabaggers to get their votes? I can't tell if he's just doing a lousy job of acting like an angry revolutionary, or if he's really a lunatic, or both. You decide.

I think he is all of the above. After all this is the clown who spearheaded Proposition C which will be on the Aug. ballot and if you vote "yes" you will be essentially giving up your right to health care. If this highly unconstitutional statute passes, Brian Nieves will be responsible for making Missouri the laughing stock of the country. What's next Brian...secession?

And I like how he emphasizes every! word! for! maximum! effect! Hilarious. Is his target audience hard of hearing? And the wild-eyed finger wagging at the end ... hahahaha. What a douche.

Does anybody else wonder if Nieves supports the Federal Government and State Government doing nothing then what does he plan on doing if elected? That's right, just what he has for the last eight years Do Nothing!

Apparently hate mongering, fear mongering, bigotry and lack of truth appeals to some; he gets elected.

I wonder if the Nieves worshippers ever ask themselves what wonder boy was doing for 8 yrs in Jeff City. Look up the bills he supported. Then ask yourself this: How does making it harder for a woman to have an abortion and easier for a man to carry a gun help YOU find a good job with a solid future? How does making sure the state driver's license test is offered in English only help YOU pay your bills and feed your family. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

This ad ends with Brian sayng "leave us alone". Not coincidentally, that is what Tea Bagger and Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship said before 29 miners were killed in his mine. "Leave us alone" is what Wall Street said as they developed "innovative" financial products that almost destroyed our economy. "Leave us alone" is what voters should say to Mr. Nieves.

I notice the comments have been disabled for this video on YouTube. I wonder why?
Fear is all Nieves has. Fear of brown people. Fear of Muslims. Fear of "Obama and his liberal ilk." He has no ideas about how to govern if elected so he can't get votes that way. So he uses fear. And sadly, fear, real or imagined, is sometimes all it takes to get elected these days.
posted by Rp - 07/16/2010 1:23:28 PM
Brian's MO has always been to throw out as much red meat as he can to his radical right base to get these folks fired up and to the polls on election day. That's an unsurprising political strategy to get nominated during a primary. But I don't think Nieves and other teabagger candidates like him, appreciate the long-term damage their fear mongering is doing to these United States. The division they foster is dangerous and bad for America. To Nieves, it's just about winning the nomination. He doesn't care about the debris field he leaves behind.

I think Brian can handle it, had ENOUGH. It's not like anyone here called Nieves "Hitler" or "Antichrist" the way the teabaggers do Obama.

I would be interested in some responses from some of the Amway pyramids that Nieves built up overseas and San Diego. How did he treat them? Here's a guy who made his money off the backs of minorities now making his greed for power on the backs of minorities. He's really a fair and balanced kind of guy.

So a Amway salesman that relied on a Ponzi scheme to make a living wants to "left alone" to rip off more people? That would explain his attitude.
posted by Rp - 07/18/2010 10:28:15 AM
We laugh at Nieves and his Amway pyramid scheme but that experience probably taught him two valuable lessons that are useful when running for public office. A. Network marketing. B. Appealing to people on an emotional level to make the sale. Really, what else is there to getting elected?
Except, Brian is not selling carpet cleaner anymore. He's selling division, hatred and fear. And the damage his product is doing (will do) to our nation is far worse than anything Barack *Hussein* Obama has ever done.
I hope Republicans in Franklin County are instinctive enough to sense the danger Nieves represents when they cast their vote on Aug 3. Where the reactionary, authoritarian right wants to take this country will not end well for our nation if history is our guide. They are their own self-fulfilling prophecy. Everything they fear will come to pass only if they are given the reins of power.

I see a lot of Nieves signs in eastern Franklin County. But the senate district includes Warren County and part of St. Louis County. The Repug power brokers in Franklin County back Stratman. The St. Louis voters may got for Jackson. This could be very interesting. I'm going to take Repug ballot Aug 3 and go back and forth between Stratman and Jackson. The NEA has endorsed Jackson because of his educational priorities. Stratman might have a better chance because of the money behind him. What do you think?
posted by cobrompton - 07/19/2010 1:29:25 AM
I voted absentee for Stratman. I've read Jackson's literature and have seen yards with both Nieves and Jackson signs, and I think they'll split the extremist vote.
I'm not voting in Washington, but I'm certainly supporting Deickhaus over Cindy McGEE. She's not as bombastic as Nieves, but she is certainly just as crazy in her own way. As for the 98th, I wrote in Mary Jo Straatmann!

Just a reminder that the FCD committee has three contested races in the county on Aug 3 in Union Out of Town, Union Ward II, and Boles. If you live in one of these districts pulling a Republican ballot will prevent you from being able to vote for your committee members. Other than those three races I don't think there are any other contested races for Dems in August in the county. Feel free to pull a Repub ballot and vote for the least crazy Republican of your choice. It's an open primary. If you are not sure what Ward or Township you live in call the County Clerk's office at (636) 583-6364 or email franklin@sos.mo.gov .

Thanks for the good info, Rp. I'm leaning toward Stratman for senate at this point.
What do you all think about the presiding commissioner's race? I've heard Landing will just draw votes away that Keeven needs to beat Sleepy John. I've had some back and forth emails with Keeven. He's dead set against the coal ash landfill next to the MO River which is good. But he's also attending the crazy Nieves fundraiser next Monday. Have you seen this invitation? These people are not only stupid, selfish and crazy. They are downright dangerous.

Hey, Rp or dg, can you give all the dems and independents that will be voting in the "REPUBTARD" primary a guide on who to vote for? We do not want to cancel each other out. let's take out "AMWAY CIRCUS BOY" and "ARROGANT ARAND" for sure !!!!!

Hinson is the next Nieves - Nieves' team is running Hinson's campaign. If you are voting against Nieves, then you need to vote FOR Arand.
posted by Rp - 07/23/2010 7:43:02 AM
If you are a Democrat pulling a Republican ballot in the 98th District don't vote for either Hinson or Arand. Write in Mary Jo Straatmaann. She's a great gal. Level-headed, thoughtful. She is going to be a great representative. I suspect Arand has the GOP nomination locked up without our help.
Looks like Dick Stratman is the most moderate Republican in the 26 Senate District (I know, crazy huh?).
For presiding commissioner, pick your poison. Ron Keeven is openly opposed to the toxic coal ash waste dump Ameren wants to build in our county. If Sleepy John gets in his goal will be to make Franklin County the #1 most polluted county in the state (in between naps). But apparently Keeven supports Nieves.
Dems have candidates for county clerk (Teresa Connelly) and auditor (Crystal Jennings) so you could write those in as well.

As I understand it, Ron Keeven and Mark VIncent rabidly hate one another. Vincent has been a puppetmaster in the city of Union and Franklin County way too long. He was one of the original drivers to get rid of Ruth Dowil (former Union Collector and probaly the most honest politician ever in Franklin County). Keeven and Vincent frothing at the mouth at one another with Vincent quiting as Franklin County Attorney is just too delicious to pass up. As far as Hinson and Arand, I "KNOW" Paul Arand and he is the "RABIDLY" against any working class family that does not own their own business or have a "PROFESSIONAL DEGREE". Hang out the American Legion in Union when he has a little "truth serum". He hates labor unions and drives a "TOYOTA", because of that. I prefer the enemy I don't know to the enemy that I know.

I talked to Ron Keeven yesterday. I have a better understanding of why he supports Nieves. Nieves helped him early on on a small business issue and feels a debt of gratitude to him. I did not get the sense that Keeven is an extremist like Nieves has turned out to be. Ron would be wise to pay a little closer attention to who Nieves represents now, and his hateful rhetoric, and keep an arms length.
Like Arand, Keeven is fiercely pro-small business, whereas, Sleepy John is a stooge for large corporate special interests. It'd be nice to have representation for working people in this area again, though. That's the kind of rep I think Mary Jo Straatmann would be. If you live in the 98th that's who you want to vote for in Nov.
posted by locknload - 07/25/2010 12:47:12 PM
Mary Jo in Nov. for sure!!! I would like to know more of Hinson's backround though. Does he actually work for a living, the firemen that I have talked to seem to think highly of him. Republican or Democrat, I just want to see more candidates that have an actual working class background. This "SMALL BUSINESS'S ARE THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE!!!" crap is getting old. The only reason they are creating more jobs(that pay less and have lower benifits) than large ones is because of offshoreing (thanks "Ronald Reagan and the ZENITH DECISION"). You need large ones, small ones and a healthy middle class that moves the money between the two. It'a 3 legged stool, and each leg is as important as the other one. You can balance on one or two long legs for only so long. The "TEABAGGERS", as patriotic as they claim to be, do not seem to be able to understand that this country was built on "protectionist" sentiments. Hear all of the local business "CONSERVATIVES" crying "BUY LOCAL"? Common Sense, they say. Then they get into their "TOYOTAS", fly their "CHINESE" made American flags, head to their "PRO-LIFE" rally, donate money to buy that "VIRGIN MARY" statue, that was carved out of "CHINESE" marble by slave labor, with profits going directly to the "CHINESE GOVERNMENT" to subsidize "MANDATORY ABORTIONS". Can you spell "HYPOCRIT"

Funny, Brian used the exact same term as Massey CEO Don Blankenship. It was only 29 dead guys, come on, Leave Us Alone!
Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank discovered what those of us who watched Massey Energy CEO Donald Blankenship operate over the years have known for some time.
Blankenship, who has made a career of busting unions, violating mine safety laws, attacking environmentalists and shilling for the far right and corporate America, has no shame.
Blankenship didn’t hit the national stage until one of his coal mines blew up and killed 29 West Virginia miners in April. In the wake of the Upper Big Branch disaster, Blankenship has sued the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), implied the deadly blast was God’s fault and told the government to keep its hands off patriotic business like Massey. Writes Milbank:
If Don Blankenship had any sense of shame, he’d crawl into a mine and hide.
But Blankenship must have no sense of shame, because he visited the National Press Club last week to complain about “knee-jerk political reactions” to mine deaths and to demand that the Obama administration lighten regulations on his dirty and dangerous company. “We need to let businesses function as businesses,” an indignant Blankenship proclaimed. “Corporate business is what built America, in my opinion, and we need to let it thrive by, in a sense, leaving it alone.”
While Milbank powerfully indicts Blankenship’s incredible arrogance, he also writes that the coal baron is a poster child for the corporate world’s newly aggressive campaign to paint government as the heavy-handed bully with crushing safety, tax and environmental laws that is beating up these poor companies that are just trying to save the nation’s economy.
It’s easy to paint Blankenship as a villain, with his moustache, double chin and rough edges (he twice lamented the “abstract poverty” in the world). But his theme—and his complete absence of corporate responsibility—is very much the message corporate America has adopted in this mid-term campaign year: If you’ve got a problem, blame the government.
Milbank then goes on to blow up the myths the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, “a sort of radicalized corporate Tea Party,” and the Blankenships and other Big Business bullhorns are spreading. Click here to read his full column.

Thanks, FF1. My dad always told me that the best judge of character, was to do hard physical labor, side by side all day, with the person that you were concered about. Then get drunk with them. It's like truth serum. He is 66 and can still out-work and then out-drink most people half his age. Sadly, most of us do not have time for this anymore. Tell Mr. Hinson to show up at the American Legion in Union, just ring the buzzer, and stop in at Elmer's on the courthouse square. Lots of political talk and motiveated voters from both parties, at both places. We might not be able to work with him, but at least we could drink together. It would be nice to get another point of view besides "ARROGANT ARAND'S, SMALL BUSINESS UBER ALLES" dogma.
