Missouri Tea Party Groups Reject Blunt Will Nieves stand with them in solidarity? Date Posted: Thursday, July 29, 2010 by Randy Phillips Twenty eight Missouri Tea Party groups (including the Franklin County chapter) signed a letter confirming they do not endorse the favored GOP candidate for U.S. Senator, Roy Blunt.
Roy Blunt, like other RINOs, wants to be associated with the Tea Parties for his own political advantage. However, his record of voting for Cash for Clunkers, the TARP bailout, No Child Left Behind and other unconstitutional legislation does not reflect the conservative values of Tea Party Patriots. In addition, Roy Blunt’s association with Washington D.C. lobbyists has earned him a reputation of being one the largest recipients of lobbyist support, including Fannie and Freddie.
We have been surprised and disappointed to learn that Michele Bachman is scheduled to attend a fundraiser for Roy Blunt this Saturday, July 31, in St. Louis. Because we consider this to be very a very dishonest hijacking of the Tea Party name, and damaging to the Tea Party reputation and progress, we are planning a protest at the event. The purpose of the protest is to say to Missourians and the media, that Roy Blunt is not endorsed by the Tea Party groups of Missouri and does not reflect the core values that unite us.
Here's what I want to know. Will Brian Nieves stand with them in solidarity in opposing Roy Blunt? Nieves has billed himself at every turn as the outsider Tea Party candidate in the race for Missouri Senate District 26, mouthing all the right slogans, repeating all the right code words. But talk is cheap.
The Tea Party in District 26 should press Nieves on this matter. Is he really with them, or is he just another rank opportunist like Blunt who "wants to be associated with the Tea Parties for his own political advantage"? That's an important question for them to ask.

From what I know of Nieves, he's ten times more opportunistic than Blunt. If the tea-party in our county supports him it only goes to show that they can be played like violins. |

It should scare the crap out of Republicans that Roy Blunt is NOT conservative enough for these people and they look up to a crazy person like Michelle Bachman. |

Since 2005, the Watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has highlighted the most egregious violators of the public trust in its annual Most Corrupt Members of Congress report. Now, CREW has begun a list of Crooked Candidates to shine the spotlight on some of the lousy politicians vying for federal office in 2010. Here's their collection of non-incumbent candidates so far:
CREW's Crooked Candidates 2010
Roy Blunt -- Running for U.S. Senate, Missouri
Roy Blunt is a candidate in the Republican primary for the United States Senate in Missouri. For the last 14 years, Rep. Blunt has served in the U.S. House of Representatives in the state's 7th congressional district. As a member of Congress, Rep. Blunt came under fire for a variety of issues including employing the same corrupt tactics that forced his mentor, former Texas Rep. Tom DeLay, to resign. Rep. Blunt's ethical issues were documented in CREW's 2006 report on the most corrupt members of Congress.
In 2003, Rep. Blunt divorced his wife of 31 years to marry Philip Morris (now Altria) lobbyist Abigail Perlman. Before it was known publicly that Rep. Blunt and Ms. Perlman were dating - and only hours after Rep. Blunt assumed the role of Majority Whip - he tried to secretly insert a provision into Homeland Security legislation that would have benefitted Philip Morris, at the expense of competitors. Notably, Philip Morris/Altria and its subsidiaries contributed at least $217,000 to campaign committees connected to Rep. Blunt from 1996 to 2006.
Also in 2003, Rep. Blunt helped his son, Andrew Blunt, by inserting a provision into the $79 billion emergency appropriation for the war in Iraq to benefit U.S. shippers like United Parcel Service, Inc. and FedEx Corp. Andrew Blunt lobbied on behalf of UPS in Missouri, and UPS and FedEx contributed at least $58,000 to Rep. Blunt from 2001 to 2006.
Family connections have also helped another of Rep. Blunt's sons, former Missouri Governor Matt Blunt. Gov. Blunt received campaign contributions from nearly three dozen influential Missouri lobbyists and lawyers when he ran for governor of Missouri in 2004, half of whom had provided financial support to his father. Earlier in 2000, when Matt Blunt was running for Secretary of State, Rep. Blunt was involved in an apparent scheme, along with Rep. DeLay, to funnel money through a local party committee into Matt Blunt's campaign committee.
Rep. Blunt and his staff had close connections to convicted former lobbyist Jack Abramoff. In June 2003, Mr. Abramoff persuaded then-Majority Leader DeLay to organize a letter, co-signed by then-Speaker Dennis Hastert, then-Whip Blunt, and then-Deputy Whip Eric Cantor, which endorsed a view of gambling law benefitting Mr. Abramoff's client, the Louisiana Coushatta, by blocking gambling competition by another tribe. Mr. Abramoff had donated $8,500 to Rep. Blunt's leadership PAC, Rely on Your Beliefs.

Also, Roy Blunt ranks #8 in top oil industry recipients while sitting on the House Energy and Commerce Committee ...

BTW, Blanche Lincoln D-AR ranks #1 this year. She sits on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and has been a reliable vote for the fossil fuel industry. But I think she's gone after November. And good riddance to her.
Anyway, I'm glad to see the Tea Party groups opposing Blunt. They oppose him for very different reasons than we do. But it does show their strident commitment to today's conservative standard. There is no such thing as being too far right.
I'm still waiting for Nieves to take a similarly principled stand and publicly denounce Blunt, though. Is he the Tea Party candidate or not? |

They seem to think TARP and No Child Left Behind were Obama's big government programs. But those were brought to us by George W. Bush not Obama. |
