Prescription Drug Assistance For Veterans

Recent changes make more vets eligible for prescription drug benefits -- regardless of income

Date Posted: Wednesday, August 12, 2009 by Larry Hurlbert

If you are a Veteran and have been ineligible for prescription drug assistance from the VA, you may now qualify. Effective June 1, 2009, you may be eligible for assistance regardless of your income. In the past many Veterans were ineligible because they "made too much money", but this eligibility requirement has recently been eliminated.

There are different levels of co-pay depending on your income, but your worst case scenario would be a co-pay of $8.00 per 30-day prescription. If you are currently on Medicare or your current health plan has a higher co-pay, it may be advantageous for you to apply for this benefit (it's easy to apply). If you are currently covered by Medicare, this could eliminate the "doughnut hole" coverage gap. Since this is a federal program are all states the same? I have a cousin living in Phoenix. My aunt has been trying to help him see a VA Doctor because of a serious heart issue, but she tells me he can't have some of the tests and his medicine is not covered. He claims his VA benefits have recently been cut. He is, of course, blaming it on the President's health care plan. I am wondering if that has anything to do with it or perhaps if it is because he has just recently moved from Kentucky to Arizona and perhaps his benefits coverage may have changed from state to state.
