Important Changes to Medical Benefit Eligibility

Income Threshold adjustments may make you eligible for VA Medical Benefits

Date Posted: Monday, August 31, 2009 by Larry Hurlbert

Effective June 15, 2009 the VA has adjusted the income thresholds upward by approximately 10 percent. If you were turned down in the past because you made too much money, you may now be eligible. This isn't the only eligibility guideline but it is a good indicator of whether or not you qualify. For example a Veteran with 1 dependent can make up to $42,200 and a Veteran with 3 dependents can make up to $52,700 and still be eligible. Even if you are a little bit over these income levels you may want to go ahead and apply as there may be a little discretionary latitude in the numbers.

All veterans are potentially eligible for health care benefits even though you did not serve in a combat zone. Reservists and National Guard who were called to active duty by a Federal Executive Order may also be eligible. Veteran's health care is not just for service connected injuries or medical conditions. Even though you may not need VA medical services right now it is wise to apply for eligibility now just in case you need assistance in the future.
